The UFT is calling on its members to vote for four candidates it endorsed in the upcoming Nov. 3 elections.
“It’s going to be a low turnout election,” said Paul Egan, the UFT’s political director. “Every vote will matter more so we strongly encourage all our members to exercise their right to vote.”
In the race for Staten Island district attorney, the union is backing former congressman and city councilman Michael McMahon. McMahon, a Democrat, has a strong track record on education and has said that as district attorney he will place special emphasis on improving safety in city schools.
The district attorney position was vacated by Dan Donovan, a Republican, who was elected to replace Rep. Michael Grimm in Congress after the latter pleaded guilty to felony tax fraud and resigned his post in January.
The union is also backing contenders in three other special elections.
In the contest for the Queens City Council seat vacated by Mark Weprin, who resigned to take a position with the Cuomo administration, the UFT has endorsed Democrat Barry Grodenchik. Grodenchik won a six-way primary race in September with support from the union. He previously served in the state Assembly.
Democrat Alicia Hyndman, a local community board member, has the UFT’s backing in the race for the Queens Assembly seat vacated by William Scarborough, who resigned from the Assembly in May after pleading guilty to charges that he had stolen from the state.
Pamela Harris, a community activist and education booster who runs an after-school media arts program, is the union’s choice in Brooklyn’s 46th Assembly District. The seat was vacated by Alec Brook-Krasny, who resigned to return to the private sector.
