Florida governor scales back testing

New York Teacher

Responding to a groundswell of opposition from parents, Florida Gov. Rick Scott (right) on April 14 signed into law legislation that will scale back the state’s standardized testing.

The legislation eliminates at least one exam and delays the release of school grades — and the high-stakes decisions attached to them — until the remaining exams are deemed valid by outside experts. It also ends a requirement that local school districts create tests for subjects not covered by state exams and limits the amount of time that can be spent on state-mandated testing.

Parent groups and the state teachers union say the law is a step in the right direction, but are calling on Scott to do more.
