Are you a new teacher looking for proven lesson plans? Are you a veteran educator looking for creative ways to reach students or eager to share your own innovative techniques?
A new feature of the recently relaunched Share My Lesson website is a special UFT section created for UFT members, and it can be your go-to resource. It contains hundreds of lessons and resources, including content from partners like the Stony Brook World Trade Center Wellness Program. The home page also has links to important UFT information and resources.
“Share My Lesson is a generous, helpful and egalitarian community of educators,” said Adam Feinberg, a social studies teacher at the Urban Assembly School for Emergency Management in Manhattan. “Anyone can upload, download and give feedback through ratings and comments, and it’s all free.”
Created in 2012, Share My Lesson is now fully owned and operated by the American Federation of Teachers. The digital collection of support materials for educators has more than 300 content partners and more than 300,000 trusted resources for pre-K to 12th grade, many designed to support teachers implementing the Common Core standards. It logs about 3.2 million visits annually and has more than 900,000 registered users nationwide.
“This is a great tool teachers can use to share best practices and learn from each other,” said UFT President Michael Mulgrew. “And it’s another example of the role the UFT plays to support teachers in their craft.”
The Today’s News, Tomorrow’s Lesson section of the website takes top news stories and breaks them down into digestible content, including discussion questions. The site has created lessons connected to current events such as the Orlando shooting, the Baltimore riots, the Keystone oil pipeline and the Rio Olympics. It also has extensive materials related to the presidential election, such as the Democratic and Republican conventions through the eyes of young voters.
José Luis Vilson, a math teacher at JHS 52 in Inwood, Manhattan, said he supports Share My Lesson because it places the union’s work firmly in the area of teaching and learning. “We are teachers who willingly contribute to each other’s professional growth at every level, and Share My Lesson creates a perfect opportunity for us to share effective practices with one another,” said Vilson, who has contributed lessons and conducted a webinar for the site.
