Guidance from the Department of Education on mandated reporting

News Stories

The following email was sent April 23  to all school counselors by Chapter Leader Rosemarie Thompson and to all social workers and psychologists by Chapter Leader Raul Garcia.

Since the switch to remote work, I've received questions about our responsibility as mandated reporters. The DOE, in consultation with the UFT, has released new guidance about mandated reporting in the remote learning era.

All pedagogical and non-pedagogical school personnel are still mandated reporters when working in their professional capacity and must continue to follow the requirements of Chancellor's Regulation A-750 (child abuse) and Chancellors Regulation A-210 (attendance).

The DOE's new guidance details how school staff members should carry out their mandated reporter responsibilities during remote learning and at the regional enrichment centers. In particular, it lays out the questions that you should ask as you try to determine if a student's failure to participate in remote learning is tantamount to educational neglect.

Thank you for your hard work during this challenging time. Stay safe and healthy.
