Learning conditions checklist

New York Teacher

Here are some things you could do or ask for to make sure your school is doing all it can to support student success. Many of these will be familiar steps that you may have already taken this year.

  • Review student records including prior-year achievement and consider what instruction your students will need to do their best. Review your students’ IEPs and make sure they are getting the support they need.
  • If you are in an Integrated Co-Teaching class, make sure that the ratio of special education to general education students is correct and that the class is fully staffed when co-teachers are absent.
  • Whether you are a regular classroom or support teacher (such as SETSS or AIS), make sure that you keep the lines of communication with your colleagues open and that students who are scheduled for support actually receive it.
  • Insist that alternate settings such as SAVE rooms are appropriately staffed and that instructional materials are available.
  • Review the school’s curriculum and materials to determine if pieces are missing or of poor quality.
  • Advocate for professional discretion in your classroom.
