Lesson plans about March on Washington available

New York Teacher

In recognition of the 50th anniversary of the historic March on Washington for Jobs and Freedom, the American Federation of Teachers’ Albert Shanker Institute published lesson plans and materials that K-12 teachers can use in their classrooms.

The lessons — created with input from a number of UFT members — highlight figures such as A. Philip Randolph and Bayard Rustin. They also illustrate the demands and organization of the march, including the alliance between the civil rights and labor movements, which was so crucial to the success of the march and the broader freedom struggle.

The Shanker Institute is directed by former UFT Vice President for Academic High Schools Leo Casey. The lesson plans are posted on the Shanker Institute's website.
