Following the inaugural Moral Monday rally on Jan. 12 that drew a thousand protesters to Albany, the UFT joined once again with public school and community allies for a Moral Monday demonstration in front of Gov. Andrew Cuomo’s office in midtown Manhattan on Feb. 2. The demonstrators called for strong public schools, affordable housing, a $15 minimum wage and other policies that will help working people. The protest was a response to Gov. Andrew Cuomo’s State of the State address, which attacked public schools and did nothing to address the large funding gap between rich and poor school districts in New York State. “A quality education is more than a privilege for the few,” said UFT Assistant Secretary LeRoy Barr (above, center) at the rally. “It is a fundamental right to have a good education, and that means there has to be equal funding for children throughout the state.”
