Teacher’s Choice is back

New York Teacher

UFT-represented educators once again are eligible for reimbursement for some of their out-of-pocket classroom expenses through Teacher’s Choice.

The program wasn’t in effect last school year because of the pandemic. However, the UFT lobbied for and won $20 million for Teacher’s Choice for the 2021–22 school year.

Eligible UFT members are receiving the same amount this school year as they received for the 2019–20 school year. Teachers, for example, are once again getting $250. [See all amounts in the chart]. Substitute teachers, school psychologists, school social workers, school counselors and school secretaries will receive the same amount as a regularly appointed employee in the same job title.

Title Amount
Teachers $250
School psychologists $110
School social workers $110
School counselors $110
Universal literacy coaches $110
Single Shepherds $110
Occupational and physical therapists $95
School nurses $95
Lab specialists $85
School secretaries $60

The landmark City Council program, initiated by the UFT more than 25 years ago, reimburses educators for the purchase of classroom and school supplies of their choice. This year, personal protective equipment such as face shields and gloves is an allowable expense.

The purchasing period began on Aug. 1 and will continue through mid-January.

To receive reimbursement through Teacher’s Choice, you must save and submit your receipts as proof of purchase. These receipts must accompany a DOE Statement of Purpose/Accountability form.

Members will receive their Teacher’s Choice funds in their last November or first December paychecks. If they receive the funds in their paychecks and do not file an accountability form with receipts by the deadline, they must return the money to the DOE.
