Michael Mulgrew, the UFT president since July 2009, was reelected to the position for the sixth time in May, receiving 53% of the vote.

The independent Global Election Services, which conducted the election for the first time, announced the results on May 31.

Mulgrew, the Unity caucus candidate, received 29,302 votes. Amy Arundell, the A Better Contract candidate, garnered 17,977 votes, or 32.6% of the vote, while Olivia Swisher of the ARISE caucus received 7,942 votes, or 14.4% of the vote, according to the certified results.

“I want to thank the tens of thousands of UFT members who put their trust in Unity and in our work on behalf of the union. I also want to recognize all the candidates who ran in this election — it is no easy task,” Mulgrew said. “Now, we have to focus on the work in front of us: protecting public education, fixing Tier 6 and getting the financial respect our paraprofessionals deserve.”

Reelected to officer positions were Unity caucus candidates LeRoy Barr as secretary, Michael Sill as assistant secretary, Tom Brown as assistant treasurer, and Vice Presidents Karen Alford (elementary schools), Richard Mantell (middle schools), Janella Hinds (academic high schools), MaryJo Ginese (special education), Leo Gordon (career and technical education high schools), Mary Vaccaro (education) and Anne Goldman (private and nonprofit sector members).

Treasurer Victoria Lee, who was elected by the UFT Executive Board in February 2024 to fill the vacancy as treasurer, was elected by the membership for the first time.

The new three-year terms start on July 1.

A total of 58,318 ballots were received, a 15% increase compared with the number of ballots cast in the 2022 union election. This year, members had the option to mail in their ballots or cast them at polling stations set up at major union events and the UFT borough offices.

Mulgrew worked as a classroom teacher for more than 12 years, most of them at William E. Grady Career and Technical Education HS in Brooklyn, where he served as chapter leader for five years. In 2005, he became the vice president for career and technical education high schools. He became UFT president in 2009 when Randi Weingarten — serving as both AFT and UFT president at the time — stepped down to focus solely on the national position.

Global Election Services mailed a total of 201,931 ballots to members’ homes on May 1. All UFT members — including members of the Retired Teachers Chapter — are eligible to vote for president and the other unionwide offices, but the RTC share of the vote is capped at 23,500 votes.

Elected on the same ballot were UFT Executive Board positions and delegates to the American Federation of Teachers, New York State United Teachers and National Education Association conventions.
