Upcoming events

  • Sunday, June 12; Sunday, June 19 and Saturday, June 26: Throughout all of June, the Children's Museum of the Arts will host "Inclusive Sunday" workshops and events for children with disabilities and their families. These events are geared toward children with physical disabilities ages 8 and up. RSVP online »
  • Tuesday, June 7: The DOE invites parents to a citywide conference for parents of English language learners and former English language learners from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. at El Museo de Barrio at 1230 5th Ave. in Manhattan. Parents will learn about bilingual programs, how to support their children academically and more. For more information and to register, see the DOE website »
  • Wednesday, June 8: Come to a workshop for parents of people with developmental disabilities from 10 a.m. to noon at 80 West End Ave. in Manhattan, room 124.   • Wednesday, June 8: High school seniors attending their proms are invited to a free prom makeover event from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. at Liberation High School, 2865 W. 19th St. Students can drop in to get their hair and makeup done before their big night. See the flier »
  • Friday, June 10: There will be a free screening of Inside Out at Crocheron Park in Bayside, Queens at 8:30 p.m. This is one of many free movie screenings that the Parks Department will offer throughout the city all summer. For more information, see the full list of summer movies »
  • Saturday, June 11: The Department of Education invites parents to a spring conference for families of students with disabilities from 9 a.m. to noon at 2500 Nostrand Ave. in Brooklyn. Learn about special education programs and connect with other special education families. Register online now »
  • Wednesday, June 15: The DOE will host a parent conference in Spanish in order to improve access for families who speak little or no English. The conference will be from 9:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Brooklyn Public Library. See the event listing »
  • Thursday, June 16: Sinergia, Inc. invites parents of children with disabilities to a workshop about teaching children tools for self-management called Empowered Parents, Empowered Children. The workshop will run from 10 a.m. to noon at 2082 Lexington Ave., 4th floor, in Manhattan. For more information and to register, see the event listing »
  • Friday, June 17: Support public school students' art by coming to Thrive: An Experiential Art Exhibition displaying the art of NYC public school students at UFT headquarters, 52 Broadway, in Manhattan. The evening will include a cocktail reception and art show. This event is sponsored by the UFT and the Thrive Collective. Admission is $50 (plus a $3.49 handling fee). Get tickets online now »

Summer camps and programs

  • Summer camps for all ages at the Queens Zoo: The Queens Zoo offers summer camp programs for toddlers, teens and every age group in between. Camp programs cater to the interests of future scientists, veterinarians, zookeepers and more. These programs are available for a fee, and most run for about a week at a time. Find out more »
  • Sports classes for kids in NYC parks this summer: The City Parks Foundation offers free sports classes in soccer, track and field, golf, tennis and more. Register online now »
  • Leadership program for immigrant high school students: The New York Immigration Coalition invites immigrant high school students to apply for its second cohort of the New American Youth Leadership Corps. The program will meet weekly this summer for leadership workshops, community service projects and more. The application deadline is June 9. Apply online now »
  • Dual-enrollment and college-readiness programs: High school students are invited to enroll in College Now summer programs. These are dual-enrollment (both college and high school credit) classes and college-readiness classes offered by CUNY. They span many disciplines and are offered in all boroughs.   • Drop-in family art workshops at the Queens Museum: The Queens museum invites families to drop-in art workshops on Sundays from 1:30 to 4 p.m. Workshops are free with museum admission. For more information, see the website »
  • 2017-18 high school admissions: If your child is entering 8th grade in the 2016-17 school year, it's not too early to prepare for high school admissions. The Department of Education has already published a high school directory and handbook. There are also high school admissions workshops in July.   • Check whether your child's school meets CPR requirements: All schools are required to have at least one Automated External Defibrillator (AED) and staff members who are CPR/AED certified. To find out more, read the DOE guidelines »

  • Free museum admission for children with disabilities: Starting July 1, children with disabilities and their parents are invited to register for free admission to the Children's Museum of the Arts in Manhattan. The museum simply asks that in exchange, parents and caregivers provide feedback as to how the museum can improve accessibility. Find out more »
