Upcoming events
- Thursday, June 23: The Mayor's Office of Immigrant Affairs and the NYC Commission on Human Rights will host an "Iftar in the City" event, a dinner celebration in Manhattan, to bring together our diverse communities and celebrate Ramadan. A halal and vegetarian menu will be served, and accommodations will be provided for those observing the sunset prayer. This event will run from 7:30 to 9:30 p.m. on E. 10th St. between 2nd and 3rd Avenues in Manhattan. Preregistration is required. RSVP online now »
- Thursday, June 23: Come to a free viewing of Annie (2014) at Faber Park in Staten Island at 8 p.m. This is one of many free movie showings in NYC parks throughout the city that will be offered all summer. For a full list, see the parks department website »
- Wednesday, June 29: Come to St. George Library in Staten Island for a summer reading carnival from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. There will be carnival games, face painting and a presentation from the New Canaan Nature Center called "The Amazing World of Animals." - Monday, July 4: The city Department of Parks & Recreation invites families to its Staten Island Philharmonic concert and fireworks from 6 to 11 p.m. at Alice Austen House Museum in Alice Austen Park. This will be one of many free concerts in parks throughout the city that will be offered all summer. For a full list, see the parks department website »
- Sunday, July 17: The Alice Austen House at 2 Hylan Blvd. in Staten Island invites you to the 6th annual "Smooth Sounds by the Sea" jazz and R&B concert featuring Bill Saxton. - Thursday, July 21: The New York Public Library will hold information sessions about free English classes at two of its Staten Island locations: Great Kills Library at 56 Giffords Lane at noon, and Dongan Hills Library at 1617 Richmond Road at 7 p.m. All adults are welcome to take English classes. You must attend an information session to enroll in a class.
Summer camps and programs
- Free Dreamer's Academy for middle and high school students: The City University of New York (CUNY) College of Staten Island invites students in grades 7 through 12 to register for a five-week program designed to prepare students for New York State standardized tests. The program will run from July 6 to Aug. 18, Mondays through Thursdays, and include classes in pre-Civil War America, theater, visual and graphic arts, global citizenship, public speaking and dance. Parents are invited to an informational meeting about the Dreamer's Academy on Tuesday, June 28 from 6 to 7 p.m. at the College of Staten Island in building 1P, the performing arts building, in room 116.
- Sports day camp in Staten Island: The United Sports League is accepting registration for its six-week, three-week and one-week day camps for children between the ages of 7 and 12. Prices range from $250 to $999, with discounts available for siblings. Camp activities include basketball, volleyball, flag football, soccer and academic activities. - Free theater education program in Staten Island: Between July 21 and Aug. 3, boys and girls between the ages of 9 and 18 are invited to participate in St. George Theatre's educational outreach programs. Students will take dance, singing and acting lessons; see professional performances; and more. Lunch is provided daily. The program runs from 9:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. each day. - High school students can learn to code for free: CodeNow is accepting applications from high school students for its free computer programming workshop on July 23 and 24 and Aug. 6. High school students will learn the programming language Ruby, and create games and apps. Students will work with software engineers and in small groups. - Sports classes for kids in NYC parks this summer: The City Parks Foundation offers free sports classes in soccer, track and field, golf, tennis and more. Register online now »

- Free fruits and vegetables for some Staten Island residents: The Mariner's Harbor Mobile Market and Mobile Market on Staten Island are each held twice a month and provide free fruits, vegetables and recipes for families in their respective neighborhoods. Just bring proof of address and a matching photo I.D.
The Mariner's Harbor market is open to those living in Mariner's Harbor Houses — NYCHA, Arlington Terrace Apartments and zip codes 10302, 10303, 10310 or 10314.
