Educators, parents and colleagues from a neighboring school gathered in the school library at the Cultural Academy for the Arts and Sciences in East Flatbush, Brooklyn, on April 4 to send postcards alerting New Yorkers to vote “no” to a state constitutional convention when it comes before them on the November ballot. Each person brought the names and addresses of five New York State residents who needed to be educated about how a constitutional convention could endanger public employee pensions, environment protections and many other rights and benefits. “‘Each One Teach One’ was our motto,” said Chapter Leader Deborah Caquias, who organized the activity. The group mailed more than 300 postcards. “It was a nice way to connect people — everyone really loved it,” she said. Aimee Mateo, a 10th-grade English teacher at the school (seated at right in photo) was among the educators who joined the action. “This is just the beginning; we’re going to continue,” Caquias said.
