A transgender student in Wisconsin won a federal injunction preventing his school from requiring him to use a separate restroom from other students. United States District Judge Pamela Pepper ruled the student, Ashton Whitaker, must be allowed use of the restroom consistent with his gender identity.
“I’m so relieved I’ll be able to just go to class, apply to college and graduate without worrying if I’ll get in trouble for using the restroom,” said Whitaker.
The ruling comes as legal disputes rage across the country over transgender students’ right to use the restrooms consistent with their gender identities. A case similar to Whitaker’s in Virginia is under consideration for review by the U.S. Supreme Court.
