The Trump administration on Jan. 20 issued an executive order freezing all Obama-era regulations not yet in effect, including the regulation governing accountability for the Every Student Succeeds Act, the 1-year-old federal education law. That federal regulation was finalized in November and scheduled to take effect on Jan. 30, but now it could be paused for up to 60 days.

The White House has not clarified why it is delaying the regulation. President Trump’s nominee for U.S. secretary of education, Betsy DeVos, did not commit to maintaining the existing accountability regulations during her Senate confirmation hearing.

Congressional Republicans have expressed interest in doing away with many federal regulations via the Congressional Review Act, which would prevent another president from reinstituting them unless Congress passes a new law.
