President Donald Trump has appointed Frank Brogan as assistant secretary of elementary and secondary education, the top Education Department position overseeing K–12 policy. Brogan formerly served as Pennsylvania’s university chancellor — a post he resigned earlier in 2017 as fiscal and enrollment troubles mounted for the state’s higher education system. A former teacher, principal and superintendent in Florida’s Marin County, Brogan also served as Florida’s commissioner of education and as lieutenant governor under former Florida Gov. Jeb Bush.
Brogan has supported using tax dollars for private schools and has opposed affirmative action at universities.
