The UFT on Jan. 15 launched a new TV ad urging New Yorkers to support revisions to the state’s learning standards proposed by the Common Core task force and the reduced focus on high-stakes testing.
“The Common Core rollout was a disaster,” the ad’s announcer intoned at the beginning of the 30-second spot. “Parents knew it, teachers knew it. And now, Gov. Cuomo’s task force is doing what’s right.”
The ad featured clips of excerpts from news articles that highlight the task force’s findings. “Tests don’t count against students,” read one. “New York Regents Vote to Exclude State Tests in Teacher Evaluations,” read another.
The announcer gave the upshot: “Less testing; greater focus on learning. That’s a start, but there’s more to do.”
As the ad came to a close, viewers saw teachers and students as the announcer said, “Let’s work together to support sensible and fair learning standards that help every child in every neighborhood succeed.”
The ad ran from Jan. 15 to 24 on local and cable networks in the New York City area. It was featured during the NFL playoffs, and Knicks and Rangers games, as well as morning television shows including “The Today Show” and “Good Morning America,” and evening and late-night shows such as “60 Minutes,” “Modern Family,” and “The Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon.”
