UFT members in partnership with their union are making a difference — while also making history — in public schools across the city. That’s the message of the UFT’s latest TV ad.
The 30-second spot, highlighted rising graduation rates, test scores and the number of students taking Advanced Placement courses, among other accomplishments of New York City public schools.
Greg Monte, who teaches history at Franklin D. Roosevelt HS in Brooklyn, is the first to speak. “I don’t know which I love more — teaching history, or making it,” he says.
Third-grade teacher Teresa Wilson of PS 264 in Brooklyn declares that “we’re the United Federation of Teachers — the UFT,” while Carla Gavilanes, a special education teacher at PS 102 in Brooklyn, continues, “helping New York City public schools make history.”
Public school parent Malcolm Murray notes that “more kids are getting computer science, music and art, right from the start.”
The ad ran on broadcast, cable and on-demand TV from Oct. 10 to 20, giving the UFT exposure on “Morning Joe,” “Good Morning America,” “The Rachel Maddow Show,” “The Late Show with Stephen Colbert,” “Black-ish,” “Scandal,” “The Voice” and NFL games, as well as other widely watched programs. The ad is also appearing on Facebook through Nov. 7.
UFT members received an email from UFT President Michael Mulgrew on the morning the ad launched, giving them a chance to watch it first.
“We know you’re proud of the work you do as educators. And you have every reason to be,” Mulgrew wrote.
Pointing out the “challenges looming in the year ahead from powerful forces looking to take away your hard-earned rights and benefits,” Mulgrew said, “it’s more important than ever that we stand together as UFT members in support of the amazing work we do.”
He noted, “All the great work you have done as New York City public school educators made this ad possible.”
