Manhattan Borough President Scott Stringer, with the strong backing of the UFT, came from behind to cinch the Democratic nomination for city comptroller on Sept. 10.

Forty-two of the 47 candidates that the union endorsed in City Council races claimed victory in their primaries, while two lost. The margin of victory was so narrow in another three races that the ballots are being recounted.

Among the winners was Mark Treyger, a history teacher and UFT delegate from south Brooklyn’s New Utrecht HS, who won a three-way primary race. “This union ran 54 campaigns simultaneously from June to Primary Day,” said UFT President Michael Mulgrew. “This was our biggest get-out-the-vote operation ever.”

He said UFT volunteers deserved enormous credit for their hard work.

“Our members knocked on doors, handed out literature, attended campaign events and made over 100,000 live phone calls to other members,” Mulgrew said.

The city comptroller’s race, which appeared to be a shoo-in for Stringer in the spring, changed dramatically when ex-governor Eliot Spitzer entered the race in early July and poured millions of dollars of his family’s real-estate fortune into his campaign. Polls taken up to two weeks before Primary Day showed Stringer behind by a sizeable margin.

In his victory speech, Stringer gave kudos to the union for the role it played in his election.

Mulgrew said he was “confident that Scott Stringer will be a strong voice for working New Yorkers and will hold the city accountable for its financial decisions.”
