With a new administration coming to City Hall and the Department of Education on Jan. 1, the UFT released a new fast-paced TV ad urging New Yorkers to work hand in hand with teachers to move the city’s public schools forward.
The 30-second spot, which featured five UFT members, a parent and several city public school students, aired from Nov. 17 to Nov. 27 on TV stations, coupled with an online media campaign.
“We design our commercials to move issues,” UFT President Michael Mulgrew explained at the Delegate Assembly meeting on Nov. 20. “We’re setting the groundwork for the work ahead.”
At the time of the ad’s launch, he said, “After years of Mayor Bloomberg’s failed schools policies, teachers are asking parents and the community to join us to make New York City schools the best in the country.”
Included in the spot were Brooklyn teachers Corrinne Bailey of PS 65, Michele Ferraro of PS 204, Dante Hadley of IS 227 and Mannor Wong of PS 69; Matt Panetta of PS 335 in the Bronx; and parent Mark Johnson.
In the commercial, Panetta says that the focus should be placed on teaching and learning, “not just tests.”
Johnson states, “Parents in the community are getting on board.”
Wong notes, “Together we can build good schools in every neighborhood” and concludes by saying that “our schools and city work best when we all come together.”
Mulgrew spoke with optimism at the November Delegate Assembly about what having a new administration at City Hall will mean.
“We need relief on work conditions — teacher evaluations and paperwork,” he said. “Then we can engage the membership in the amazing organizing opportunity ahead of us. It’s time to push on empowering educators.”
