UFT President Michael Mulgrew (right) discusses the union's legislative agenda with State Assembly Speaker Carl Heastie.

The UFT filled in state lawmakers about the issues of most importance to New York City educators on Jan. 25, when the union hosted its annual legislative reception at the Corning Tower Observation Deck in the Empire State Plaza in downtown Albany. UFT officials including UFT President Michael Mulgrew and his fellow officers met one-on-one with about 70 lawmakers to stress the UFT’s legislative priorities this year. At the top of the list was increasing state funding for schools — particularly for the $2 billion in state aid owed to New York City schools as a result of the Campaign for Fiscal Equity lawsuit settlement — and legislation requiring charter schools to enroll and keep their fair share of English language learners, students with disabilities and homeless students.
