Video contest: What's BRAVE about public schools?

As part of its campaign to Build Respect Acceptance and Voice through Education, the United Federation of Teachers’ BRAVE Program is holding a video contest to highlight the efforts made by schools to create environments free of discrimination and harassment.

The contest is open to New York City public school students; students are invited to submit a 3–5 minute video that conveys the contest theme.

Suggested ideas

  • What does your school do to promote acceptance, tolerance and respect?
  • How do you and your classmates stand up for others in a positive way?
  • Is there a club or program that raises awareness about and works to decrease discrimination and harassment in your school?

Contest Requirements

  • Contestants must be students of the New York City public school system. The contest is open to all elementary, middle and high school students.
  • Contestants must have permission of their school principal and a teacher to serve as a sponsor and primary contact person.
  • Submissions are in video format. Video submissions should be no longer than five minutes.
  • Videos can be submitted via USB flash drive, DVD or other hard copy.
  • Students/schools must follow DOE guidelines regarding videotaping/filming of students and videotaping/filming on school grounds. Schools must obtain parental consent and clearance.
  • Video submissions must include the BRAVE video contest submission form with the name of the school, name of principal, school address, school telephone number and sponsoring teacher with contact details.
  • All video submissions must be received by Friday, April 1.
  • No more than two video submissions per school.

Judging Criteria

  • A committee of BRAVE and other UFT staff will judge videos.
  • Judges will look for original and unique things that your school community is doing to be BRAVE and take a stand against or raise awareness about discrimination and harassment.
  • Winning videos are thought provoking, inspiring, moving as well as entertaining to the viewer.
