The sight of hallways lined with pink balloons and teachers topped with pink wigs can only mean one thing: It’s Pink Day in public schools. On Wednesday, Oct. 18, UFT members across the five boroughs came to school decked out in their finest pink duds in support of breast cancer awareness. For the union’s largely female membership, breast cancer is a significant issue: About 1 in 8 women will be diagnosed with the disease over the course of a lifetime. From coral to cherry blossom, from rose to flamingo, members displayed a dizzying array of pink hues on hats, shirts, socks, nails and even a tutu or two. It was all part of an effort to show solidarity for breast cancer survivors while raising funding and awareness for research toward a cure.
