In order for speech teachers to be eligible to be honored at the Better Speech and Hearing Month celebration for grants, projects or presentations, nominees must meet the following criteria:
- They must be school-based speech providers.
- They should be nominated based on work they have produced or presented, including: articles; grants; projects; new websites; or presentations at ASHA, NYSSHLA or another professional conference.
- The nomination must be for work produced or presented between April 2014 and March 2015.
- The nominee must be someone who was not honored in the past two years.
If you are nominating a grant, project or presentation, consider the questions:
- When was it initiated?
- What was its purpose?
- Who was the audience?
- Did it achieve its goal?
For student projects and art work, we are accepting drawings, paintings, posters, poems, letters and video presentations such as songs and skits. The theme of student submissions should be what Better Speech and Hearing Month means to the student or how speech therapy has positively impacted their lives and educational experiences.
In order for student projects to be nominated, they must meet the following criteria:
- Visual art work must be 8 1/2 by 11 inches. Poster boards will not be accepted.
- Video presentations should be three minutes or shorter and submitted on a CD.
- Speech providers can submit up to two projects by students in their caseloads. No more than three students may work on any one project.
- Include the students' names, ages, genders and cognitive levels.
Make sure to save a copy of student submissions for your portfolio, especially if you are untenured.
The deadline for submissions is March 14, 2015. Late submissions will not be honored.
Please keep in mind that we are only selecting a few honorees in each district. Each winner will only be allowed two guests at the award ceremony at UFTÂ headquarters in Manhattan.
Nominees who are selected will receive a formal invitation to attend the celebration on May 14, 2014 from 4 to 6:30 p.m.
Chapter members, speech supervisors, winners and their principals will be encouraged to attend.
