The UFT is committed to showcasing and saluting your achievements, as we did on Feb. 8 at our annual CTE Awards Ceremony, where the whole CTE ecosystem — nearly 600 teachers, administrators, industry partners and representatives of higher education — came together to honor more than 70 educators and programs. But it’s impossible to honor all the life-changing work that goes on in CTE, and the amazing educators who are doing it, on that one special night.
While we will continue to recognize your accomplishments on an ongoing basis, we want you to join us in promoting your great work and the work of your colleagues, your students and your school communities.
We’ve launched a CTE Proud campaign to highlight the extraordinary things happening in your schools every day, and you can play a role in it.
Share your triumphs and those of your colleagues with each other and with the world outside CTE.
Today, that’s easier than ever: Use your social media networks on outlets including Twitter, Facebook and Instagram to share your successes using the hashtags #CTEProud and #UnionProud.
You know our programs prepare thousands of students for high-skill, well-paying careers while also getting them ready for post-secondary education if that’s the path they choose.
Help us spread the word, and you’ll be helping to build up CTE.
You all have incredible stories about what you are doing in programs that range from agriculture to business to information technology to engineering to hospitality and more. We want to hear those stories from you, the hard-working educators at the heart of the action.
You’ll be receiving an email in March from the UFT inviting you to submit your ideas. We’ll turn them into New York Teacher stories, podcasts and videos about our innovative New York City programs. We’ll use your achievements to advocate for even more CTE programs and for the funds to improve them.
We have already proven ourselves: The number of CTE programs continues to grow as does the number of students in them. Our college- and career-readiness index is better than ever. We’ve expanded employer and industry involvement. Our students have more work-based learning opportunities. And we have an 83 percent graduation rate that is higher than the city average.
Now it’s time to build on these successes.
We want you to share best practices, open your doors and go beyond the four walls of your classroom to help us move CTE forward.
We’re looking at ways to improve instructional practice through professional development, too.
We’re introducing more industry-specific professional learning in areas such as automotive, business, the arts and media.
Through a collaborative effort between the UFT and the State Education Department, more CTE teachers have achieved and maintained authorized-trainer status from the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) and, in return, have provided OSHA training to thousands of students.
We continue to be on the cutting-edge of programming: The STEAM Center at the Brooklyn Navy Yard is co-located in an industrial hub where its students — underserved teens from eight high schools in economically disadvantaged communities — learn skills that may one day land them high-tech, in-demand jobs right where they study.
