Brooklyn’s PS 114 deserved better

New York Teacher

To the Editor:

Contrary to what was reported by the New York Post [Nov. 15], PS 114 in Brooklyn has made significant and measurable improvements in the area of student progress and student performance. Specifically, the progress made by PS 114’s lowest-performing students in ELA is actually better than 45 percent of all schools, and in math, better than 92 percent of all schools. This is data that was conveniently absent from the recent public reports from the DOE.

In addition, there is verifiable evidence that our parents and teachers, according to the most recent Learning Environment Survey, overwhelmingly recognize the 180-degree schoolwide shift. Our school, once designated as persistently dangerous, has for the past two years established and maintained a safe and thriving learning environment for both students and staff.

It is disingenuous at best to publicly highlight only certain pieces of data out of context from the rest. Is this the only way the mayor and the chancellor can continue to push their agenda of closing schools? Shame on them both!

PS 114 is making great strides and will continue to do so. Parents and teachers are working together, harder than ever, to help all of our students reach their highest potential.

Andrea S. Carte, business manager, PS 114, Brooklyn
