Change and equity

New York Teacher

I’m all for rezoning [“Schools as a solution,” Editorial, Nov. 5]. We read a lot about how our city’s African-American students are underperforming and being disproportionately suspended compared to white students. We’re also hearing about some schools maxed out to the point where they’re putting children in trailers, while schools with predominantly black students have empty classrooms and struggle to find the funding (due to low enrollment) to meet their students’ basic educational needs.

While a lot of this has to do with the segregation of our neighborhoods, rezoning is a solution that could bring about real change and equity to our schools. I truly hope that the opponents of rezoning open their eyes and learn from our nation’s history to see the benefits.
