Coming through for our kids

New York Teacher

To the Editor:

Just a word about the actions of teachers and administration of Scholars Academy in Far Rockaway in response to Hurricane Sandy.

Thirty percent of the staff and 70 percent of the students were displaced. Those of us who were safe trekked to the peninsula and cleaned out the wrecked homes of our colleagues. We spent several days replanning our school. We were the last New York City school to reopen in January and yet we posted our highest scores ever.

Help from the city? It didn’t even send us pencils, but we educated our kids. because we’re devoted to their success. We’re not heroes and don’t want to be.

We’re teachers.
