Dual language props

New York Teacher

Regarding the article “Dual language: A practice whose time is overdue” [New York Teacher, April 17], this form of instruction should start in kindergarten with every child, so that we can be a real nation of bilingual speakers, like in many other countries around the world where people speak two or three or more languages.

More schools need to incorporate dual language programs. This program has been practiced at PS 16 in Staten Island for more than six years. My daughter was fortunate to be part of this program and has become almost completely fluent in Spanish.

She is now in the 6th grade in an intermediate school, where she will receive two years of language and is planning to continue with Spanish. Love it!

I’m a bilingual teacher with a master’s in ESL and this last three years teaching transitional bilingual education has been the greatest. I admire the capacity of my newcomers for language acquisition. But it is very important to provide the bilingual student population with adequate instruction. That’s why I strongly agree with bilingual programs, no matter if it is transitional bilingual ESL or dual language.
