Lighting the way

New York Teacher

In “Mission Accomplished” [Feb. 2 issue], there is mention of the UFT and the School Construction Authority removing the PCB lighting in the schools. The article neglected to mention that it was the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency that initiated this effort, in spite of the pushback of former Mayor Michael Bloomberg, by monitoring the testing of these lights and giving the city a plan to change them. I had the pleasure, as a former teacher and advocate for school indoor-air quality, to meet with Regional Administrator Judith Enck to discuss the role of energy-efficient lighting in the schools.
