Michael Mulgrew is not a bully. Mulgrew is a Staten Island resident who experienced the same grief that all of us went through when we saw the tragic death of Eric Garner.
Mulgrew never accused any police officer of wrongdoing or misconduct. Along with thousands of others, frustrated by weeks of inaction, he asked for a thorough and complete official investigation of Garner’s death.
As the president of the UFT, he asked his members to join him at the recent protest march, and many of us did. He never forced anyone to march with him — those who did were glad to be there and show our support for Garner’s family. We did not march against the police — a terrible, untruthful accusation — and we were not there for either Mulgrew, or Rev. Al Sharpton, or any other person.
We marched for that most fundamental American value: justice for all.
