More reading strategies

New York Teacher

Besides the classroom library for independent reading [“Nurturing the joy of reading,” Teacher to teacher column, Jan. 7] I have class sets of books from the Common Core library. I read with great expression and intonation while my students follow along. As we read, I facilitate discussion questions that the students talk about. They also may agree or disagree with the topic at hand. We then do art-related activities and cross-curricular activities that go along with the theme and setting of the story. This is often the highlight of their day, They love it!
