Concerning the New York Teacher editorial about Schools Chancellor Carmen Fariña bringing “joy” back to the classroom [see “Ode to Joy,” Jan. 16. issue], we certainly need to go back to the human side of education where education, happiness and self-esteem are the goals, not numbers, test scores and compliance.

Exactly my words. This year more than ever I feel that the system has been sucking the fun out of teaching. I love to teach students about mathematics and how it relates to many things in their lives. I just wish I had more time to teach rather than asking my students to fill in bubble sheets.
