School secretaries ignored

New York Teacher

While searching through the entire edition of Jan. 16 New York Teacher, it was disappointing to be unable to find one story relating to secretaries or secretarial issues.

Why has our chapter become so dysfunctional and, therefore, easily dismissed and ignored? Why isn’t the UFT’s School Secretaries Chapter contributing to every issue of the newspaper?

The blurred lines of secretarial duties, the one-secretary schools, secretarial per session activities being performed by others — these are but a few issues that secretaries are facing at this time.

Secretaries should demand that we be recognized. Our voices need to be heard.

Let’s celebrate school secretaries — not just once a year at a luncheon, but throughout the year with articles recognizing accomplishments and difficulties faced on a daily basis.
