Strategy of support needed

New York Teacher

Students with the most challenging students should have the most support [see “DOE overwhelmed struggling schools with high-needs kids, report shows” on page 11]. The Department of Education does not provide schools with enough support, but faults them by closing or co-locating them. The policies behind the “educational reformers” are insane! I am the chapter leader at a school that was nearly co-located, despite a lack of support. We were able to prevail, but the DOE should stop closing and co-locating all schools, and have a strategy of support (including wraparound services, guidance counselors and social workers) for all struggling schools.
