Thankful for the union

New York Teacher

To the people who think New York State is literally the worst, well, it does have its flaws for teachers, but we don’t have nearly as many issues as our colleagues around the nation. How about going and teaching in Oklahoma? What if you didn’t have the union to protect you? Your pension? Sure, no job is perfect, but I’m grateful for the things we do have that many other teachers do not have around the country.

I am a retired educator and still paying dues. I still contribute to COPE, to the UFT, to New York State United Teachers and to the American Federation of Teachers. I’m a founding UFT member who has done so in gratitude. I remember how abominably teachers were treated and paid before organizing into one of the best, most militant unions in the United States.
