William Thompson might have been the greatest mayoral candidate ever to run for office. My problem with picking him in the primary, however, is that the union’s selection process is not democratic.
A Delegate Assembly selects who our union will support, and the members are encouraged to vote for that candidate.
As a teacher of social studies, I always applauded our nation’s democratic process, where everyone qualified gets the right to vote. To ignore the majority of our membership creates a sense that our union is ruled by the few rather than the many.
In the future, why not send a primary or general election ballot to each of us via the New York Teacher so we can decide who will earn our vote?
