A union's value

New York Teacher

[This letter was originally published in the New York Post on Sept. 22, 2013.]

The editorial "Workers Reject a Failed Union" (Sept. 18) is ludicrous.

The Post writes about the Triborough Amendment as if this was a gift by the City of New York to its employees. This is not true. Public-employee unions worked hard to get this legislation passed. The city fought it every step of the way, but the unions fought harder to get it enacted and to prevent it from being repealed. If union members took this advice and decertified their unions, The Post would get its wish and Triborough would be repealed. How does this protect our union members?

In regard to the United Federation of Teachers and its political clout, it endorsed 54 candidates in the primary election and 48, including Scott Stringer, won. The $2.6 million referred to in the editorial was all money donated by members to endorse the candidate they democratically selected to support.

Not one cent of the money spent was dues money.

The Post's disdain for all public employees, especially teachers, really shines through.
