What will the governor do?

New York Teacher

In the Dec. 6 issue, the New York Teacher rightfully celebrated the results of the 2018 election. The Democratic Party finally gained control of the state Senate. There was no mention, however, of Andrew Cuomo.

For virtually all of his previous two terms, the governor, a longtime supporter of for-profit charter schools and a fan of Eva Moskowitz, had a not-so-secret alliance with the runaway Democrats and the right-wing Republicans in the Senate.

This collusion successfully killed a number of progressive bills, including those for appropriate educational funding and reforms that had already been passed by the liberal Democrat-controlled Assembly.

Despite Democratic control of both the Assembly and Senate, it remains an open question whether Cuomo will continue to be an obstructionist in 2019 and beyond.
