More librarians

New York Teacher

My compliments to Christina Gavin, the Herbert H. Lehman HS Campus librarian featured in the Sept. 5 “What I Do” column.

I worked as a high school librarian for 21 of my 33 years in the New York City public school system and was always fortunate to be one of three librarians in schools with between 3,000 and 4,000 students. Serving 3,200 students as the sole librarian in the seven schools that share the Lehman building sounds daunting — I know how busy and hectic things can get even when the workload is shared.

Kudos to Ms. Gavin for her enthusiasm and dedication. I hope the administration of her school will see fit to hire one or more librarians so that the services of which Ms. Gavin is justifiably proud can be expanded.
