Richard Vasquez, a school counselor at PS 34 in Brooklyn, “feeds” an envelope to a “lion” — a tradition in Chinese New Year celebrations. The lion dance is meant to chase away evil spirits and to shower people with prosperity, and feeding the lion is believed to bring good luck for the year.

UFT President Michael Mulgrew (kneeling) and Vice President for Middle Schools Richard Mantell join a pair of dancers and Marian Thom, the committee co-chair who planned and organized the event, onstage at Joy Luck Palace.
