HERstory, a Celebration of Women in the UFT
HERstory celebrated the stories of the scores of women, past and present, who have helped build the UFT into the powerhouse it is today, at a Sunday brunch on March 25 at union headquarters in Manhattan.
Bronx paraprofessionals add their voices to the story circle at HERstory, honoring the women who have helped make the UFT strong.
UFT sisters from every borough joined in celebration of their stories and those of their founding sisters.
Paraprofessionals (from left) Margo Braxton of PS 36 in Manhattan and Sharon Anderson of PS 111 and Maria Francisco of MS 287, both in the Bronx, are ready to enjoy their brunch.
Some of the 100 participants applaud the work of the committee that organized the event.
Teacher Raquel Duenas (left) of JHS 265 in Fort Green, Brooklyn, and UFT staffer Lindsay Levine relax in the Pampering Room under the skilled massage techniques of Queens Vocational HS students Stephanie (left) and Jessy.
Enjoying themselves is the contingent from MS 35 in Bedford Stuyvesant, Brooklyn, (from left) teacher Laurette Teford, guidance counselor Esther Smith, paraprofessional Marie Pelzer and school associate Patrice Scott.
Showing off the latest in T-shirts are members and staffers from Staten Island, plus paraprofessional Althea Morris (center, back) of PS 469 in the Bronx. The others are (from left), Tanisha Frank, the UFT education liaison; Novlet Golding, the para representative from PS 57; teacher Eunice Isaacs and para Morgen Dory of PS 57; and Borough Representative Analia Gerard.
Susan Perez-Gonzales, the UFT’s environmental health and safety liaison for the Bronx, addresses the gathering, including event co-coordinators UFT Vice President for Elementary Schools Karen Alford (seated, front right) and UFT Vice President for Academic High Schools Janella Hinds (seated, front left).
