Hydroponics greenhouse ribbon-cutting at PS 349, Queens
PS 349 science teachers Sheena Mathew and Amy Schier show off the now-thriving hydroponics greenhouse they started developing in October.
PS 349 students, staff and visitors can’t wait for principal Tanya Bates-Howell to cut the ribbon on the greenhouse.
Farrah Padro (right), the UFT chapter leader at PS 349, and Tanya Bates-Howell (third from left), the founding principal, thank the greenhouse’s supporters (from left) Dr. Andre Spencer, the executive superintendent for Queens Districts 27, 28 and 29; Kristen Jeffries, a constituent liaison for City Councilman Rory Lancman; and Lynette Barfield, the director of special projects for State Sen. Leroy Comrie.
Two students and members of the greenhouse “leader squad” tend a healthy tray of basil at the “seedling bench.”
A student uses the greenhouse “energy bike” to create enough power for small appliances and light bulbs.
Students, joined by PS 349 Chapter Leader Farrah Padro, proudly serve guests the tasty homemade pesto they made using the lab’s own basil.
