Middle School Conference 2019
When William Shakespeare wrote, “It is not in the stars to hold our destiny but in ourselves,” he could have been referring to the 250 eager-to-learn educators who came to the UFT’s sixth annual Middle School Conference at union headquarters on March 30.
Participants face off to trade Shakespearean insults and compliments in the workshop For the Love of Language: Teaching Shakespeare in the Middle School Classroom at the sixth annual Middle School Conference at UFT headquarters on March 30.
Paraprofessional James Petrassi (front, center) of IS 51 on Staten Island listens intently during the Unpacking Best Practices in the Middle School Math Classroom workshop.
Attendees, including teacher Ellen Boone (right) of IS 145 in Queens, applaud a speaker during the welcome remarks.
Attendees work together during an exercise in the How Boys Learn: The Disengaged Middle School Male workshop.
UFT Vice President Richard Mantell unbuttons his shirt to reveal his Middle Schools T-shirt during his opening remarks.
City Councilman Mark Treyger, a former New York City public school teacher who chairs the Council’s Education Committee, delivers the keynote address.
UFT District 20 Representative Ellen Driesen (second from right) with (from left) Galina Lahood, Juan Abreu and Michelle Charles, teachers at JHS 227.
Hearing Education Services teacher Janet Campano (left) and paraprofessional Marisol Vialet of Fordham Academy of the Arts in the Bronx practice their Shakespearean insults and compliments in the For the Love of Language: Teaching Shakespeare in the Middle School Classroom workshop.
