On Sept. 18, 2018, the New York State Board of Regents named Alhassan Susso of International Community HS in the South Bronx the 2019 New York State Teacher of the Year.
Alhassan Susso teaches government, economics and personal development at the International Community High School in the South Bronx. In addition to his regular teaching duties, Susso created a course to help his South Bronx students — mainly from Latin American countries, Yemen, Bangladesh and nations in West Africa — plan for their future. Susso helps his students develop the leadership, communication and financial management skills necessary to achieve their dreams. Last year, every student who completed Susso’s course graduated high school and 97 percent are enrolled in college.
“Alhassan Susso embodies the power of teaching,” said Michael Mulgrew, president of the United Federation of Teachers. “By empowering his students, by helping them to believe in themselves, he gives his high school students the tools they need to chart their own future. It is no surprise that some of his graduates now want to become teachers themselves. They see it as a powerful way to make a difference. Congratulations to Alhassan, his students and his school for this wonderful recognition.”
