On Aug. 22, 2018, the New York Times reported that Education Secretary Betsy DeVos is considering allowing states to use federal funding to purchase guns for educators.
In response, UFT President Michael Mulgrew issued the following statement:
Stupidity knows no bounds. Teachers need resources, not weapons. But this is a distraction. This is a bad idea from a Secretary of Education who wants to cut billions of dollars from public schools. So she and her supporters get us all talking about a nonsensical idea about arming teachers, so we don’t talk about the real issue — funding education.
