Mulgrew issues statement on effort to raise the charter cap in New York

Press Releases

Charter school advocates are planning an effort to raise the cap on the number of charter schools allowed in New York City.

In response, UFT President Michael Mulgrew issued the following statement:

Four years ago, the state raised the charter cap, but all New York parents and taxpayers have gotten is a string of broken promises. Charters promised to recruit and retain the neediest children — hasn't happened. They promised to share innovations — hasn't happened. They were supposed to do more with less. Instead, New York City is on the hook for even more money — as taxpayers now have to pay charters' rent in private spaces. Given the charters' track record, the cap should be lowered. Raising the cap will drain more money from New York's traditional public schools, and the only ones to benefit will be a few people in the charter industry.
