Mulgrew on the selection of Richard Carranza as schools chancellor

Press Releases

On March 5, 2018, Mayor Bill de Blasio announced that Richard Carranza, Houston's schools chief, would become the next chancellor of New York City public schools, replacing Carmen Fariña.

In response, UFT President Michael Mulgrew issued the following statement:

Mr. Carranza has earned a reputation for collaboration with teachers, parents and school communities and has been a real champion of public schools. We are encouraged by his commitment to all children, his resistance to a “testing culture” and his support for the community schools approach.
