On Friday, April 13, Working Families Party Director Bill Lipton accused Governor Andrew Cuomo of bullying political groups and unions that were considering endorsing his challenger Cynthia Nixon in her bid for governor. In response, two unions — SEIU Local 32BJ and Communications Workers of America Local 1 — announced that they would pull out of the party.
UFT President Michael Mulgrew issued the following statement:
Mr. Lipton is misguided and delusional if he believes the Working Families Party still represents the voices of labor and working people in New York. We walked away years ago when it became evident that their focus was on personal political agendas and a few egos. When asked to behave responsibly, they react like children throwing a tantrum in the classroom.
