With a new administration coming to City Hall and the Department of Education, the UFT launched a television ad campaign on Nov. 18 urging all New Yorkers to work together to improve the city’s public schools.
The 30-second spot, called “Teaching and Learning,” will air through Nov. 27 on broadcast stations as well as cable television networks; online media will include Facebook, Gotham Schools and Capital New York and will run through Dec. 2. The ad will be seen during some of television’s most popular shows, including: NY1’s “Inside City Hall,” “Conan,” “The Daily Show with Jon Stewart,” “Iron Chef,” “Saturday Night Live,” “Jeopardy!,” “Judge Judy,” “The Late Show with David Letterman,” and various morning and evening news broadcasts.
The ad features teachers, parents and grandparents, all calling on New Yorkers to work hand-in-hand to move New York’s schools forward.
“Together, we can build good schools in every neighborhood,” says Mannor Wong, an elementary teacher at Brooklyn’s P.S. 69K. Matt Panetta, a 2nd grade teacher at the Bronx’s P.S. 35X tells the audience “Keep the focus on teaching and learning. Not just tests.”
The spot was produced by Shorr, Johnson and Magnus Strategic Media. The UFT will spend $1.3 - $1.4 million on the ad buy. The television portion of the ad will be seen by more than 8,000,000 viewers approximately 9.5 times and the digital is expected to deliver nearly 8,000,000 impressions.
UFT President Michael Mulgrew said, “The recent election demonstrated that New York is ready for a new day in education. After years of Bloomberg’s failed schools policies, teachers are asking parents and the community to join us to make New York City schools the best in the country.”
