Q and A on civil service for supervisors of therapists

Q & A on civil service for supervisors of therapists

(Please refer to the Q & A for therapists for additional Information about the civil service exam and related issues)

1. When I am appointed will I lose my supervisory position?

No. Upon appointment as a therapist, the DOE will place you on leave from the appointed therapist title and continue you as provisional supervising therapist. This is an administrative task that requires no action on your part.

2. I understand that therapists will have to serve another probationary period after they are appointed. Does that apply to me as a supervising therapist?

All therapists who are appointed from the list, including those placed on leave from that position and serving as provisional supervising therapists, will serve a probationary period in the appointed therapist title. However, the DOE has agreed that service as a provisional supervising therapist will count towards completion of that one-year probationary period.

3. What protections do I have in the event I am disciplined or terminated during my probation period?

The DOE has agreed that, as long as the law allowing it to do so remains in effect, it will restore Article 19 protection for provisional supervising therapists who have served at least 24 months in prior service until a test is given and you have the opportunity to become permanent supervising therapists.

4. Will I have the opportunity to become permanently appointed in the supervising therapist title?

We will vigorously press the Department of Citywide Administrative Services (DCAS) to offer a supervising therapist exam. We will inform you as soon as the notice of exam is issued and strongly encourage you to take the exam when it is offered. The exam will allow you to become permanently appointed in the supervising therapist title.
